Program Descriptions and Objectives

Braille Literacy Program

Rediscover the power of reading and writing through touch. Newly blind and low vision adults learn to read and write braille using Perkins braille writers, traditional slates and styluses and modern digital braille tools. Instruction covers the braille alphabet, contractions, tactile reading fluency, and practical applications such as labeling and personal correspondence.

Objectives: restore literacy; increase tactile reading fluency; enable independent labeling and written communication.

Assistive Technology Training Program

Participants learn to use assistive and mainstream technologies-including smartphones, computers, screen readers, video magnifiers, Meta smart glasses, and other adaptive devices. Training emphasizes communication, information access, navigation, and digital literacy for daily life, education, and employment.

Objectives: build digital literacy; expand access to education/employment; improve communication and navigation.

Orientation & Mobility Program

One-on-one instruction develops safe, confident, and independent blind travel skills. Curriculum includes white cane techniques, environmental awareness, route planning, using public transportation, and navigating home and neighborhood environments. Objectives: improve safety and confidence in travel; enable independent use of public transit; support community engagement.
